Post-Completion Optional Practical Training

Sunday, December 22, 2024

Post-completion OPT allows F-1 students to obtain employment authorization and work off-campus in a job related to their field of study.

Eligibility

Immigration regulation makes post-completion Optional Practical Training available to F-1 students who have been lawfully enrolled for one full academic year and who have applied for graduation in one of the associate degree programs at Pulaski Technical College.

Regulations

The application for post-completion OPT can be filed as early as 90 days before graduation but has to be received by the adjudication Service Center no later than 60 days after graduation. It is recommended to file for OPT as early as possible.

Post-completion OPT allows for the student to work up to 12 months after graduation anywhere in the U.S. It must be completed within 14 months of graduation. If the student has completed previous full-time Curricular Practical Training (CPT), this will count against the total OPT eligibility.

  • The employment must be directly related to the student’s field of study.
  • Student does not need to have a pending job offer letter to apply for pre-completion OPT
  • The student must not begin work until receipt of the Employment Authorization Card (EAC) and the start date listed.
  • If the student transfers to another college or university, the OPT is automatically terminated in SEVIS.
  • The student becomes eligible for another 12 months of OPT if the student begins a new academic program at a college or university.
  • If a student falls out-of-status, the OPT is automatically terminated.
