ACUE Focus: Monsurat Salami

More than 153 UA - Pulaski Technical College faculty have improved their teaching practices through a program with the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE). This rigorous, evidence based, 25-week course engages instructors with independently validated research to improve student achievement and close equity gaps. ACUE Focus is a question and answer series where faculty share their experiences with ACUE.

1. What ACUE Cohort were you a part of?

UA-PTC ACUE Cohort 3, 2020-21

2. What do you teach and how do you think you benefited from the ACUE course?

I teach mathematics courses. ACUE has helped improve my instructor’s-student interactions. It helped me see the usefulness, significance, and benefits of class activities, especially group work.

3. Best thing you learned from ACUE?

I think the best thing I learned was the importance of feedback for revision. Providing timely feedback and allowing students to revise and resubmit assignments has helped most of my students address their mistakes and make necessary adjustments. This technique has helped improve both my success and retention rate.

4. Do you think your students benefited from you taking the ACUE course and if so, how?

Yes, especially mathematical reasoning students. I have received many comments from students thanking me for providing timely feedback and giving them the opportunity to revise their projects and resubmit.

5. What was your favorite module in ACUE?

I like everything in Module 4, Helping Students Persist in Their Studies, especially, offering opportunities to use feedback for revision.
